Colón
is second only to Panama City in its commercial importance. Just one
hour from the capital, it is the main port for nearly all of the nation’s
import and re-export goods. Colón is a bustling port city,
attractive and known for its Oriental bazaars, appealing beaches and
islands, historical monuments, and its Free Zone. |
Ports
and Harbors |
The
province of Colón has two ports: Manzanillo and Cristóbal,
strategically located on the Bahía de Manzanillo and Bahía
Limón respectively. The Port of Manzanillo is one of the most
important in all of Central America.
The Colón 2000 and Dock 6 of the Port of Cristóbal are
cruise ship ports of call, receiving the most luxurious ships of Princess
Cruises, Carnival Cruises, and other lines. |
The
Colón Free Zone |
The
Colón Free Zone is the largest distribution center for Latin
america and the Caribbean. It is second only to the Hong Kong Free
Zone, enviably situated and with many distribution facilities. |
Portobelo |
During
the XVI and XVII centuries, Portobelo was the richest port on the
Gold Route between Spain and the Americas. The Aduana Real, the Royal
Customshouse, has been restored and now serves as a museum. This popular
attraction exhibits recently discovered artifacts from the Spanish
colonial period as well as a collection of robes for Portobelo’s
famous Cristo Negro, the Black Christ. |
Isla
Grande |
After
Portobelo the scenery becomes even more beautiful.
Isla Grande, 30 minutes beyond Portobelo on the Costa Arriba road,
boasts excellent surfing, lovely beaches, and mangroves. At the Isla
Grande Diving Center diving and snorkeling. The surfing here is good.
Isla Grande has been host to various international surf competitions.
It is a beautiful island. A walk up to the historic lighthouse is
definitely worth the time. |

a few hundred yards from the shore. |
